Hugh Howey Fanfiction Contest — Read Colony Collapse!

Friends, Romans, and countrymen! Lend me your ears!

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I’m competing in The Hugh Howey Booktrack Competition, which has a $5,000 grand prize, and my entry is finally ready!

Jessa is technically 24 years old, but she was born just two weeks ago, a genetically engineered colonist living on the galaxy’s distant and dangerous frontier. Trained as a Logic Engineer, she’s responsible for maintaining computers across the colony, but the latest software bug may be more than it seems… and her efforts to fix it will determine the future of her entire world.

Thanks to Booktrack’s very cool tech, the full story has a soundtrack designed, edited, and most likely horribly mangled by yours truly… so hop on over, give the story a read, and maybe give me your vote if you’re feeling generous!

Stars Rain Down Now On BitTorrent!

Joining the previous free options, Stars Rain Down can now be downloaded from the good folks at BitTorrent. It seems they’d like to be known as something more than a convenient way to pirate, so they’re now hosting and showcasing works released directly by their creators in their Bundles. Some of the available works are gated in a way that resembles early shareware software, meaning that only part is free while the rest requires a key to unlock (in trade for an email address right now, and possibly for pay later).

I skipped out on the email address, partly because I haven’t been directly email marketing anyway, but also because I just want to distribute as widely as possible. I have a good amount of faith that people who take a look at Stars will be hungry for more, so I consider every new pair of eyes a victory.

And remember, every download helps my ratings, drives me further up the list, and delivers the gift of pretty darned good science-fiction to more new people!

Released! — Biotech Legacy: Long Fall

What do we have here?

Four years have passed since human civilization fell, and life on Earth has evolved. Powered by living technology, fledgling human and Oikeyan nations now war for control on the surface, while the ancient starship Legacy and her human commander, Marcus Donovan, wait in orbit for a chance to create a more lasting peace.

But all of that changes when search & rescue specialist Jack Hernandez uncovers something dangerous hidden in the jungles of Mexico.

Now the race is on to control the artifact. Driven by fanatical ideologies and an insatiable hunger for victory, each side will unleash soldiers with power beyond reason in their bid to control the Earth.

But is any creature incorruptible enough to wield the power of a god?

Biotech Legacy: Long Fall, the sequel to Stars Rain Down, is now available right here at the Oktopod Blog. It’s on a pay-what-you-want basis,, which means you can buy Long Fall for anything over $0.99… whatever you think is fair, whatever you can afford, or whatever you bloody well feel like, as long as it’s more than a buck. In exchange, you’ll receive a zip file containing both Epub and Mobi (Kindle compatible) copies. These are Creative Commons licensed, of course, and you’re absolutely free to share them with friends, family, and even your bare-knuckle knitting club!

Small heads-up: you may have trouble opening zip files on some platforms (the iPhone for example), and will either need an app to open it, or else your desktop computer. If this is a large problem (or if none of that made any sense to you), you should probably wait for the Amazon Kindle copy which will be available sometime in the next 24 hours.

If you’ve already bought it and can’t open it, let me know and I’ll see about sending you a proper copy.

Oh… and if you’ve already read the book, be sure to check out the quotes at the beginning and end!

And now, it’s very, very late. Have fun reading!

Release: Out in the Styx!

Meet the Legacy Fleet’s self-described top maintenance crew: Nils Jansen, hacker extraordinaire with a smart mouth, Larry Hopkins, a by-the-book crewman with a short fuse, and their intrepid captain, Marco Esquivel, who’d much prefer to be sailing around the coast of Cape Cod at any given moment.

Together, they’re traveling out to the furthest reaches of the solar system aboard The Beagle, an interplanetary shuttle with absolutely nothing interesting about it what-so-ever… and that alone is kind of interesting, isn’t it?

When their simple repair mission on Pluto’s moon, Charon, doesn’t go quite as planned, it’s up to The Beagle’s crew to fend off a dangerous invader and somehow return home, but first they’ll need to overcome an endless supply of biting sarcasm and employ each of their unique skills to get the job done.

Is this the beginning of the end for mankind, or just another bumbling misadventure for three semi-competent techs? Read Out in the Styx — A Biotech Legacy Adventure to find out!

This story is a self-contained excerpt from the upcoming novel, Biotech Legacy: Long Fall, due out in November, 2013.

As the title of the post gently implies, Out in the Styx — A Biotech Legacy Adventure is now available. It should go up on Amazon in the next few days, but in the meantime, you can grab a copy right here.

So have at my friends. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to curl up and try not to think about ebook formatting for a few hours.

Inbound — Arcana Universalis: Danse Macabre

It’s finally time for an announcement! The second novella-length episode of Arcana Universalis (subtitled Danse Macabre) is finished; it’s over 23,000 words (as compared to 15,000 for Terminus), and will be released this Thursday, March 29th. This comes only 9 short months after the last part, so I’d fully understand if you’re concerned about me rushing myself. “How could a mortal man possibly write so quickly?” you’re no doubt asking yourself right this instant. “Wouldn’t his fingers bleed, or perhaps spontaneously combust!?”

And the answer is: Yes, my fingers absolutely did both. They bled and spontaneously combusted… one then the other, really. There were charred fingernails and bits of bone everywhere. Terrible mess. Now I’m typing with the assistance of some very expensive (and dangerous!) cyborg fingers which allow me to write so fast that plot twists often take even me by surprise. While reading this startling new installment, several of you shall surely faint, or worse, simply perish from the shock.

But we must press forth. Our commitment to story demands it.

This is precisely why I’m giving you a few days warning, to steel yourselves and make sure your earthly affairs are in order. In the meantime, take a gander at the cover art below, which will give you some small taste of the horrors in store.

No, it's not misspelled. Thanks for asking.

See you all on Thursday!
